New Photography Workstation Office Setup

I recently revamped my office and photography workstation. One of the goals was to eliminate all of the crazy wires (at least visually) and to provide more storage and easier access to gear.

One of the challenges of a growing collection photography gear is being able to put your hands on what you need, when you need it.

It seems that some kind of shelving for lenses and bodies provides the best way to quickly find what you need to pack for the next photography adventure.

So I took advantage of a nook in the wall of my spare basement bedroom and built some simple shelving.

I lost some art display space but I am now able to display some of my inspirational photography and art books as well as some favorite props, a collection of old vintage cameras as well as the lenses and camera bodies such as the Canon EOS RP and various GoPro cameras.

My desktop had to have enough room for my main Asus monitor as well as my Huion KAMVAS GT-191 Drawing Tablet with HD Screen 8192 Pressure Sensitivity – 19.5 Inch second monitor, keyboard, mouse and four external hard drives.

Even more importantly storage for the desktop CPU and some file storage, all the while keeping the rats nest of wires at bay.

I looked high and low for an affordable desk that would serve this purpose but had a hard time! Most desks on the market seem to be made for laptops with no cable management or even the ability of hiding wires.

I finally found this HEMNES desk at Ikea that serves my needs. It has excellent built in path ways and holes to route wires, a cabinet that can hide the CPU (or used with a shelf) and some drawers.

This desk is also real wood (pine), unlike a lot of desks on the market that are made from heavy fake chipboard.

For comparison, my old desk was this one below which as you can see leaves everything in the open. Not very good in an office that doubles as a guest bedroom where you want to keep things neat and tidy.
