Canon EOS RP Charging Accessories – OUCH!

The new EOS RP comes with a small battery and mirror-less cameras use up a lot of energy. There is the right way and the stupid expensive way to keep your new Canon EOS RP charged.

When it comes to Canon’s new full frame, mirror-less entry level camera, the Canon EOS RP, the camera body itself represents a great deal but as usual, the official Canon accessories seem to be totally over-priced.

Long time camera buyers understand this principal. The offical camera manufacturer’s batteries, chargers, lens hoods and other accessories are totally jacked up in price, which provides plenty of room for third party manufacturers to come in and offer more reasonably priced alternatives.

I recall losing a lens hood for one of my Canon lenses. The replacement hood from Canon was something like $40 – for a bit of plastic! Off brand lens hoods that look exactly the same could be found on Ebay for less than $10. Talk about gouging the customer.

Same deal with extra batteries. Sure if the company is paying for it, go for the official batteries from Canon, but if you are trying to save money on your hobby or business, find a reliable knock off.

The Smart and Cheap Way to Keep Your Canon EOS RP Charged

The new Canon EOS RP has some official accessories that seem overpriced. Luckily a lot of retailers bundle some of these accessories with the camera body. They say the mark up on a camera is only about 10%, but imagine the mark up on these accessories is more like 90%.

One of the nice new features on the EOS RP is the ability to charge via the USB-C port. BUT Canon does not give you the cords and charger for charging via USB-C. The box only included a battery and wall charger.

But they are happy to sell you the Canon PD-E1 charger for only $190!

This bulky charger is so overprice and requires a wall plug. Not exactly convenient when you are in the middle of a hike, miles from the nearest wall outlet.

The other solution is to carry a few extra batteries. The Canon EOS RP takes LPE17 batteries. You can buy the official Canon LPE-17 batteries for $50.

Or you can purchase third-party batteries for around $25 or less for TWO batteries and a charger. They may or may not last as long as the official batteries but they are small enough that you can easily pocket a few extra batteries.

But there is another solution!

The Best Solution for Charging the Canon EOS RP – Inexpensive, Portable, Powerful and Easy

I’ve found the best overall solution is to purchase a large portable charger battery pack. No need for a wall outlet after the portable charger is charged. No need for extra batteries. No need for bulky chargers. This Anker power pack will charger your camera via the USB-C cord up 8 times. And you can charge your phone with it also.

I’ve tested it with the Canon EOS RP and it works. All for less than $30! That’s a lot of savings and a lot less hassle. Just pack this unit instead of a bunch of cords, chargers and batteries.

Also consider the new small wall outlet. The power pack above does not include a wall charger. This one is one of the most compact on the market.
