The history of the sausage goes back to ancient Rome but it’s generally agreed that the American version of the “hot dog” can be traced to German immigrants to New York. They were the first to sell “wieners”, from a pushcart, in the 1860s.

One report says a German immigrant sold them, along with milk rolls and sauerkraut, from a pushcart in New York City’s Bowery during the 1860’s. In 1871, Charles Feltman, a German baker opened up the first Coney Island hot dog stand selling 3,684 dachshund sausages in a milk roll during his first year in business.
