The Problem with Bears

We live in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire, basically the foothills of the White Mountains. Forests all around us. Farms, hills, trails, woods, meadows. Perfect wildlife habitat. Our backyard teems with creatures, birds, squirrels, chipmunks, fisher, bobcat, deer and the occasional black bear.

The bears are typically not a problem until they are.

In the spring they come out of hibernation and are hungry. If it weren’t for people, they’d be foraging around for nuts, honey, tubers, winter kill etc. But when people are around they leave behind all kinds of inticing vittles. Lazy people not securing their garbage, their BBQs and their compost piles — the bears quickly learn that its easier to root around in someone’s garbage then sniff out some overwintered root vegetable.
