Selling this print of the Essex Steam Train chugging through the forest at night brings back bittersweet memories for me as it was one of the last times I spent with my father before Alzheimer’s took him from us.

I was down in the Connecticut River Valley area all summer helping my parents pack up and sell their home before a final move to Florida. My dad was obviously slipping fast and they needed to get things wrapped up before moving into their assisted living home.

My dad was getting paranoid about leaving the house to anywhere unfamiliar but I did get them to join me on this “stakeout” of the Essex steam train.

I had been photographing the train all week, sneaking out in between runs to the Salvation Army with donations and boxing up family heirlooms for my sister in Chicago.

I actually got my parents to take a ride on the Essex steam train which travels up the Connecticut River Valley which has been their home for the past 25 years or so as well as being the region in which they grew up.

Trains as a photography subject have always been a favorite subject of mine. While in Germany with my dad stationed in Heidleburg the two of us shared a hobby of model railroading that has stuck with me even though I never seem to have the room for a layout.
