Take Me To Your Leader – Robot Art

New release!  “Take Me To Your Leader” by Edward M. Fielding

My brother has a fine collection of vintage toy robots made in post-WWII Japan and sold in the 1950s at a time when the world’s attention was turning to the rapid increasing technology and the space race between the USA and Russia.

The time of Sputnik, dogs, chimps and eventually men being strapped to rockets and sent hurling into the unknown.

These popular collectible robots are an example of the pre-70s  tin toys, or tin lithograph toy which were mechanical toys made out of tinplate and colorfully painted by chromolithography.

Tinplace was a cheaper alternative to producting toys out of wood and  was used for toys beginning in the mid-19th century. Sheet metal stamping machines were invented in 1815 and allowed for the mass production of inexpensive toys. Tin toys were made from thin sheets of steel plated with tin, which keep them from rusting.

The resulting lightweight toys were certainly a great improvement over the heavy cast iron toys that came previously.  Easier to ship and the kid didn’t have to be a bodybuilder to play with them!
