Car Photography by Edward M. Fielding

Classic old vintage cars make a great photography subject. Especially compared to modern cars which seem to lack any imagination or interesting design.

Seems like the design and style as a selling point has been pushed aside for interior space and gas mileage. Back in the day when gas was cheap, little thought was given to such things and style was a much more important selling point.

Cars in the Wild – The Holy Grail of Vintage Car Photography

The Holy Grail of vintage car photography to me is finding a great old car in a period environment. Nothing compares to coming across a movie set type setup with the perfect trifecta of car, background and natural lighting.

You can go to a car museum and try to photograph cars under terrible artificial lighting where the cars are presented among a bunch of distracting signage or parked six inches apart.

Or you can go to a car show where again, the cars are parked close together, festooned with ribbons, signs and a couple folks in folding chairs sitting in front of them. And harsh direct sunlight and people all around. Or maybe the hood is popped up to show of the gleaming chromed engine or something that hardly makes for a natural image.

Nope, my favorite car photographs are cars in their natural settings and over the years I’ve been lucky enough to come across a number of these situation simply by having my camera at the ready and traveling around target rich environment which typically exist in rural areas where people have space to store these old cars, areas where they still know how to fix old things and places where the families don’t move around much so they can hand down the prized car to the next generation.

The owner of this beautifully restored and maintained Model T Ford loves to show it off in front of the closed Danbury Country Store. It’s like photographer and old car buff eye candy. He often parks it here and then hangs out and shoots the breeze with travelers who stop by and admirer the car.

Old Chrysler Sedan Windsor Vermont by Edward Fielding

This handsome old Chevy sedan was nicely parked in front of a fine old brick farmhouse in Windsor, Vermont, not far from the Harpoon Brewery, which allow me to take a modern photograph that might as well have been taken in the 1940s.

Old Woodie Model T Ford
by Edward Fielding

The only thing giving away this photograph of a classic “woodie” Ford Model T car in front of an vintage, period farmhouse in Wilmot, New Hampshire, is the fact that the photograph is in color. Back when this car was new, only black and white photography existed. That and probably the electric meter on the old farm house.

Ford Galaxy 500 in the Rain. Greenfield, MA by Edward M. Fielding

This late model car, a Ford Galaxy 500, looks perfectly at home on the streets of a period residential neighborhood of triple-decker in the working class town of Greenfield, Massachusetts. The rain adds to the realism of the scene which looks like it could be a still from a movie.

Beach Bum by Edward M. Fielding

I thank the photography gods above every time they grant me the opportunity to photograph a perfectly parked classic car in a beautiful spot like this great old Morris Minor 1000 on Prince Edward Island.

The beautiful landscape of Victoria By The Sea on Prince Edward Island is only enhanced by the presence of a classic car.

This was one of those lucky, rare lifetime moments but one tip is to make yourself available, with camera in hand, whenever there is a car show in the area.

Before, during and after, the car owners will be driving around sightseeing. If you are patient and plan well, you might just be able to capture one of these beautiful old vintage cars in a great environment.

“Pink Dreams” by Edward M. Fielding

One fine day down in the Fort Myers and Sanibel Island area of Southwest Florida, I had been on the beach with my new Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras – Fixed taking portaits on the beach at sunset.

On the way back to the car fighting off the no-see-ums which attack at dusk, a wondrous sight appeared. A 1957 Chevy Bel Air parked right up close to the beach!

I could hear the owner’s car keys jingling as he was making his way back to the car so I had to work quickly to manage a composition which excludes any people or trash cans. Luckily I had just enough time and just enough light left to make the handheld shot.
