My favorite winter tools

I recently noticed that two of my favorite winter snow removal tools are made by True Temper. True Temper started in a blacksmith shop, in a village with hand-forged farm tools. It was called American Fork & Hoe and later True Temper, a leading supplier of lawn and garden tools, winter tools, and wheelbarrows.

Now part of Ames True Temper a multinational corporation headquartered in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, USA whose origins stretch back to 1774. Today it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Griffon Corporation.

Interesting we used to live up the road from decents of the original Ames family who owned a rustic summer cottage in Seal Cove, Maine. Each summer a different set of decendants would gather each month for their turn with the cottage.

Snow Pusher Shovel – Push/Shovel/Scrape

The first one is the True Temper 1625300 SnoBoss Poly Snow Shovel/Pusher/Scraper, 20-Inch, Multi-use snow tool. This is a big wide pusher for days of light powdery snow. No need to break out the noisy, polluting snowblower, with this wide snow pusher you can just push a bunch of fluffy snow to the side.

Not recommended for heavy snow although it can be used as a scoop for heavy snow then tilted and you can drag the snow somewhere. Light snow can be lifted using the second grip spot but this large shovel is best used to move snow without lifting.

You can also use it to scrap hard snow by placing your foot on it. Overall it is a very well designed tool for all sorts of snow conditions.

Very well made with a heavy duty integrated metal handle and a thick plastic scoop made of easy to see yellow plastic. This tool will last for years.

  • 26-inch deep blade with wear strip that can be used as pusher or shovel
  • Ergonomic aluminum wider handle with room for both hands increasing leverage and control
  • Multiple grips and end grip for optimal hand placement/back posture when lifting
  • Foot step for maximum leverage
  • Reversible for tight steps and stairs

Snow Rake

In my arsenal of snow removing tools for the roof, the most useful and well designed roof snow removal tool is my True Temper Telescoping Snow Roof Rake with 17-foot Aluminum Handle.

This tool is great for removing large swaths of snow off my roof and solar panels. I just add a strip of duct tape to the edge to soften it for the solar panels since I don’t want to rise scratching them.

The pole itself is fantastic. Rather than round, it is oval shaped which gives it more strength and makes it easier to grasp with gloved hands. The telescoping latches are excellent, making it easy to change the length. The only trouble I’ve had with it is the latches freezing up if I leave the tool out in the elements, but an hour inside warming it up and you’re good to go.

Also after years of use and probably abuse of the tool as I fought hard, crusty snow, some of the bolts came loose (user puts them together), but they were simple to replace with some nuts and bolts from my canning jar of lost and found nuts and bolts.

  • Made from lightweight aluminum materials
  • Oval handle
  • Telescopes to 17′
