Mid-Coast Maine | Secret Spots

We’re staying at an Airbnb within a private association in Mid-Coast Maine that preserves a beautiful point of undeveloped Maine forest, dunes, rugged coastline, and a beautiful SANDY beach. Sand on beaches in Maine are rare and this one stretches for miles but it’s a secret.

We rented what I’d call a classic one bedroom Maine “Camp”. The windows don’t close all the way. The floors slope down the hill. The shower is missing a part in the plastic shower head from 1987 so it’s more like a warm garden hose. The shower door flys up mid-shower. The toliet nearly fills to the rim to the horror of the flusher. Some kind of animal is running around the ceiling but the location is spectacualar and exclusive.

Even in the rules of the AirBnB and the private association, they plead with guests and residents not to share the location of this stretch of beach on social networking.

Secret Spots are found typically with a bit of luck, following roads with signs like “Town Landing”, “Lighthouse Rd”, “Depot St.”, “Creamery Lane” and “No Parking” – no kidding, whenever you see a lot of “no parking” signs, you have to know there is something worth parking for somewhere in the area.

Secret Spots require wandering and leaving the bustling tourist spots – exploring backroads and taking a leap of faith. Just be sure to take note of the color of the street signs – private roads are blue while public roads are green. Head down a blue private road in Maine and you are likely to end up in someone’s driveway.
