How to Achieve Insane Dynamic Range!

HDR – Dynamic range in the music world is the ratio between the smallest intensity of sound to the largest or in other words the quietest part of a piece to the loudest part of a composition.

In photography the term dynamic range has been borrowed to mean the range between the darkest part of a photograph and the brightest part of a photograph.

There are several factors that determine the possible dynamic range you can capture in a photograph.  One is the scene itself and the other is the capabilities of your equipment.

If you are outside, the dynamic range of a scene depends on the weather.  A bright sunny day will have wide dynamic range compared to a dull, overcast day.

Today’s camera sensors are amazing but they still can’t match what our eyes can see.

So techniques have been developed to merge several photographs, each taken at a different exposure level and then combined into one massive file to achieve a High Dynamic Range or HDR final print.

This image is the result of standing in 115 degree heat in the full Nevada desert sun and taking seven exposure bracketed shots.  The seven bracketed shots were taken with a five year old Canon 6D full frame camera with a Canon 24mm Tilt Shift lens.

The shots were than processed and merged in Adobe Lightroom CC.  The result is incredible detail and dynamic light range!

Just look at the detail in the shadow areas inside the garage and then all the way to the bright areas in the sunlight glinting off the hot metal.
