How the West Was Won – The Gunsmoke TV Sets

Even die-hard fans of “Gunsmoke” might not recognize the sets of Dodge City from the long-running western TV series which followed the exploits of a Marshal in the wild west of America.

The long-running series was filmed on identical sets in Hollywood and Kanab, UT. The Utah set remains, slowly decaying on a private ranch. but is visible from the road.

The central character is lawman Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio and James Arness on television. When aired in the UK, the television series was initially titled Gun Law, later reverting to Gunsmoke.

The radio series ran from 1952 to 1961. The television series remains the longest-running, primetime, live-action series of the 20th century
