Home Theater: Banana Plugs

If you have only hooked up stereo speakers with bare-wire ends, there is a better way – banana plugs.

What are banana plugs?

Banana plugs are simple, plug-and-play connectors for speaker wires that make connecting audio equipment (speakers, amplifiers, receivers) fast, easy, and secure, fitting into binding posts without tools and preventing frayed wire shorts.

They offer convenience for setup/disconnects, tidy connections, and better contact than bare wire in some cases, though they don’t inherently improve sound quality, acting mostly as an aesthetic and functional upgrade.

Are banana plugs a must-have? Not really. The best connection of speaker wire to speaker is the old reliable bare wire screwed onto the connection. What banana plugs give you is the ability to quickly connect and reconnect speaker wires. They also prevent stray wires from short-circuiting your system. But are they necessary? No. Banana plugs are simply handy and convenient. They also provide color coordination for the positive and negative wire on your speaker cables.

So in summary, banana plugs provide:

  • Easy of use especially if connecting and disconnection equipment often.
  • Color coding for correct connection
  • Controls possible short-circuiting

My favorite banana plugs are these space-saving 90-degree banana plugs that feature two screws to secure the wire, a plastic sleeve that reduces any chance of short-circuiting and they feel very secure when inserted into a binding post.
