Grounded in Provincetown

Imagine my surprise drive out of the Cape Cod seashore and into Provincetown harbor and seeing this huge metal fishing boat grounded on the stone breakwater.

Walking nearly a mile out on the broken rock surface, cold March wind blowing off the open ocean, sun dropping on the horizon, I knew I had to hustle to get out to ship AND back before I either frozen solid, fell into a crevice or lost the light.

It’s not hard to get stranded on the Provincetown Breakwater when the ocean decides to come roaring back in at high tide. 44 people got stranded last summer and had to be rescued by the Coast Guard.

Eric Williams of Cape Cod called it right when he suggested it could be considered Cape Cod’s Eiffel Tower if the wreck had been left in place.B

How do you make the Provincetown breakwater even better? Jam a giant rusting shipwreck up against it! The 42-foot fishing vessel Artemis broke loose from a mooring near MacMillan Pier during a March storm and was dashed upon the rocky ribbon at the far east end of town. Now it’s a dandy tourist attraction!
