Goldenrod Kisses | Rustic Dining Room

I’m a sucker for old vintage neon signs like this one I found along the Maine coastline for the “Rustic Dining Room” at the Goldenrod with a “Soda Fountain” and soups, salads and sandwiches.  A tourist favorite since 1896, where you can watch the making of mouthwatering salt-water taffy in the window.

Those were the days when a trip to the shoreline was a real treat and an adventure before the Interstate Highway system flooded the area with people escaping the big cities like Boston.

Back then a homemade soup and sandwich was a satisfying meal along with the saltwater breezes along the coast. An oasis to savor outside the hot and humid ovens of the summer in the city.

GOLDENROD KISSES – located in the heart of Short Sands Beach since 1896. What is a Goldenrod Kiss? Their own saltwater taffy made in full view of spectators.

As the sweet aroma of boiling sugar and molasses fills the air, one bite of a Goldenrod Kiss will take you back to a time when things were simpler.

Short Sands Beach has many attractions incluuding nearby dining options, playground area, shops, arcade and amusement house as well as an amusement park. As its name, Short Sands beach is a rather small parcel of sandy beach—just 1/4 of a mile, which makes it a perfect beach for small children especially with respect to the sand playground on the beach. Short Sands Beach was once very sandy, but Hurricane Sandy has revealed rocky shores at low tide, and some rare colors of beach sea glass.
