Art for the Home Theater Room

This article discusses best practices for art in the home theater room, art that doesn’t reflect sound waves.

I’ve been working on my home theater room and have been working on ways to eliminate sound bouncing around and muddling the surround sound effects of modern Blue-Ray DVDs.

I have a Sony 7.1 receiver with a center speaker under the TV, main left and right speakers and back left and right surrounds in the ceiling. I have a subwoofer behind the couch and two small book shelf speakers for the back surrounds.

The room is carpeted and has a large upholstered couch so there is a lot of soft, sound absorbing material to prevent sound from bouncing around.

Unfortunately behind the couch is a row of large windows. Glass acts as effective bouncing surface for sound waves so its not good idea to have in a home theater room. I have some honeycomb shades on order to pull down during a showing.

Concerning artwork in the home theater room. Framed glass art prints, metal and acrylic prints will all create surfaces which will bounce sound.

Best to go with canvas prints or maybe even wood prints. Order a deep canvas art print and you can even install sound absorbing egg crate foam in the back of it to make an acoustic panel.

Cut the egg crate foam to size and simple slip in the back of the canvas print. Hang these prints in your home theater room or any room where you want to cut down on sound bouncing around.

A good bit of sound waves will penetrate the canvas and become trapped in the egg crate foam.
