Abandoned New Hampshire: The Living Room

Part of an ongoing series and fascination with abandoned property around the region.

I came across this old part of a sectional dumped at a pull off in Bath, New Hampshire.  I was photographing the old steel railroad bridge now used as part of a recreational trail and mostly concerned about fitting into a safe parking spot between an official state vehicle, the weeds and a giant puddle.

I didn’t give the discard coach much of a second thought as I had other things on my mind but coming back to the car and seeing the great diffused light hitting the fabric, I decide to line up a shot.

Some thoughtless person decided it would be easier to drop this couch and an old DVD player on the side of the road rather than take it to the waste transfer station.  Maybe they were on the run.  Fleeing an eviction.  Maybe they didn’t have the cash required to properly dispose of waste these days.  Maybe they were just thoughtless jerks.

In any case, the landscape is marred, hopefully only temporarily by one person’s idea of the unwanted.  Abandoned furniture that once sat human perhaps watching a football game or providing a bed for an unexpected overnight guest.  Quarters and potato chip crumbs under the cushions.

Now its just a soggy mess, soon to be home to several litters of mice over the winter unless some town official comes by to haul it away.

Wish I had an old TV to prop up next to it for the perfect completion of a surreal image.
