A Nevada ghost town you can visit

Nelson Ghost Town in Eldorado Canyon and the
Techatticup Mine, Nelson, Nevada

Nelson Cutoff Road of HWY 95S, Nelson, NV

The area known as Nelson, Nevada, was called Eldorado in 1775 by the Spaniards who made the original discoveries of gold in what is now Eldorado Canyon.

It was the site of one of the first major gold strikes in Nevada and one of the biggest mining booms in state history.

Today Nelson Ghost Town is a fantastic spot for photographers and videographers. There is a charge for photographing and video making.

Check in with the front desk for a safety warning – rattlesnakes and killer cactus – and to pay your fee. Then you are free to roam around the acers of old vintage cars and buildings.

Fun Fact

Kurt Russell filmed parts of two movies at The Techatticup Mine. “Breakdown” with Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan, was released in 1997 and several artifacts from the movie can be seen at the site.

Then several years later, the movie 3000 Miles to Graceland, was released in 2001, parts of which were filmed at the mine site. Also, starring Kevin Costner, Courtney Cox, Christian Slater, and David Arquette, several scenes were shot here including the scene where the Lucky Strike gas station blows up. Props from the movie, including the crashed airplane, can still be seen at the site.

A nice breath of reality away from the fakery of the Las Vegas Strip

A quirky attraction about an hour from the Las Vegas strip, this popular but desolate tourist destination that attracts many photographers and music video directors. Many tourist travel here on a day trip to the Hoover Dam. Plan accordingly and call ahead for mine tour times.

The main building has cold drinks at reasonable prices but no food so plan ahead and pack a lunch. There is little in the remaining town of Nelson other than a few private homes, some mobile homes and RVs. No gas either so be sure to have a full tank before leaving Las Vegas.
