After about a year of ripping DVDs and Blu-Ray movies and shows as backup on my Jellyfin server, my NAS is at about 75% full.
I have two 10 Terabyte hard drives in my Asustor AS5402T NAS set on RAID 1.
The RAID 1 setting is a computer storage configuration that creates an exact copy of data on two or more disks. So I essentially only have the 10T hard drive to store my movie collection.
I have a few options most of which involve spending more money. They include:
- Swapping out larger drives one at a time and give the RAID time to rebuild.
- Add an external USB drive to the NAS (won’t be backed up)
- Purchase a NAS extender and drives
- Add another NAS to the network
- Delete some files
- Compress some of the files
The only free options would be to delete some files or compress the existing files.
There is a free software program called “HandBrake” which can be used to significantly compress video files without any noticeable differences. Blu-ray movies can be around 25 – 30 gigabytes and using Hand Brake these can be reduced to 3 – 7 gigabytes.
For example I had a Blu-Ray rip of the Harrison Ford movie “Air Force One (1997)” that compressed from 25G to under 3.2G using the suggested default settings on HandBrake.
