3000 Miles to Graceland

About an hour outside of Las Vegas, you take a left from SearchLight, NV, drive through BLM land into the foothills around Eldorado Canyon. There you find the remains of what was once a bustling, lawless gold mining town where law enforcement dared not enter as a murder a day was the average as gold seekers fought over claims, the rare woman, mule, or their stash of whiskey.

I took this photo around 10 am on a 115-degree day. I probably could have fried an egg on the black plastic of the camera body as it ticked off the seven exposures needed to make this HDR or High Dynamic Range photograph. Seven exposures combined into one back at the photo workstation.

This spot was also used in the movie “3000 Miles to Graceland” starring Kevin Costner. Unfortunately, it only gets one star on Rotten Tomatoes.

“It’s International Elvis Week in Las Vegas, where the strip is flooded by a sea of King wannabes decked out in jumpsuits and sideburns. But five of the impersonators swaggering into the Riviera Hotel are toting heavy weaponry in their guitar cases. It’s the heist of a lifetime, orchestrated by ex-con Michael (Kurt Russell) and his cunning former cellmate, Murphy (Kevin Costner). The crooked Elvises steal away with $3.2 million, leaving the hotel in ruins and a high body count in their wake.”
