Champagne Bottle Still Life, deconstructing a fine art photograph

I recently sold a large canvas print of “Champagne Bottle Still Life” which is a black and white fine art photograph of an empty champagne bottle, cork and glasses but there is a whole lot more to this image than these elements.   The arrangement, lighting and focal point create the story.

Champagne Bottle Still Life
https://edward-fielding.pixels.com/featured/champagne-bottle-still-life-edward-fielding.html – framed fine art photograph sold to a buyer in Ramona, CA

Champagne Bottle Still Life was created early in my re-booted career as a fine art photographer.  I uploaded this image to my portfolio back in February 15th, 2013.  At the time I was still experimenting with Panasonic Micro Four Thirds cameras and lenses, trying to sell enough prints to justify a leap to full frame Canon cameras.

I was studying composition and learning the tricks used by painters to create dynamic composition as well as trying to create stories within the single frame.

If you study the photograph you can see all sorts of composition tricks based on the arrangement of the objects that work to tell the story of the night perhaps of a honeymoon, anniversary or New Year’s Eve party.  Which is why I think this image sells well every June during wedding and graduation party season.

In the photograph the sharp focus is centered on the cork and the background of champagne bottle and glasses are allowed to fade from focus into the dark background.  Black and white is use to highlight the black of the champagne bottle and the darkness beyond.  White highlights contrast the bottle label and champagne glasses while the cork is bathed in a rich light that highlights its fine, soft texture which contrasts against the  hard glass surfaces of the bottle and glasses.  So you have small but detailed object vs. large but minimal shapes.  Black vs. white.  Light vs. dark.  Hard vs. soft.  Textured vs. smooth.  The contrasts of objects work to add intrigue and interest to the photograph.

The scene might look natural and random but the placement of each element of this photograph was carefully chosen.   The cork is highlighted by being in the plane of focus and place in the bottom third according to the rule of thirds.

The cork is centered in the frame but the wire is placed to the side and slightly behind to bring the eye off center.  The other objects are arranged in a zig zag fashion to pull the eye back into the photograph.  The viewer is drawn from cork to wire, to bottle opening, to front wine glass and then to the back wine glass.

Notice also how the background is divided in roughly thirds with two thirds being black and approximately one third being the wood which also includes leading lines heading towards the back, drawing in the viewer.

Vintage Tractor Prints for Refined Rustic Decor

Cornish Windsor Covered Bridge

This fine art photograph of an old vintage tractor on  a farm in the rural New Hampshire town of Cornish makes a fine print for any modern farmhouse style of decor, refined rustic, cottage, country or farm decorating.

The sepia toned print by Edward M. Fielding looks great in an off white cream colored mat as shown below.  A recent customer purchased this large 24 x 30 inch print and matted, mounted on foam core for a client in  Woodbury, CT.  The client has an heirloom frame waiting for the print.

Vintage Tractor Photography for that modern farmhouse style
Vintage Tractor Photography for that modern farmhouse style

I really like this combination of the off white mat and the sepia tone photograph as ordered by the designer.  It looks like an old vintage photograph even though this old tractor is still in use today on the Cornish farm.

Cornish you might know is famous for its covered bridges and the home of recluse writer JD Salinger who wrote “Catcher in the Rye” and is quoted as saying:

I am a kind of paranoiac in reverse. I suspect people of plotting to make me happy.

I’m sick of just liking people. I wish to God I could meet somebody I could respect.

An artist’s only concern is to shoot for some kind of perfection, and on his own terms, not anyone else’s.
Cornish has historically been a well-known summer resort for artists and writers. Sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens began coming to Cornish in 1885, seeking a studio away from the summer heat of New York City. Artist friends followed him, including painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish, who designed and built his estate, the Oaks, in the area. The surrounding area became the center of the popular Cornish Art Colony

Vintage tractor photographs from the New England area by Edward M. Fielding can be purchased in a wide variety of frames from simple black museum type metal frames to hundreds of wooden frames as well as printed on paper, canvas, metal, wood and acrylic as well as matching products such as throw pillows and tote bags.

Hundreds of frames and mat combinations to choose from - or get it printed on canvas, wood, or metal.

A nice large print of a vintage tractor with a cream colored mat and rustic barn wood framing looks great in a modern farmhouse decorated home as well as a stately office or hotel lobby.

Edward Fielding sold a 14.000″ x 10.875″ print of Primitive Butcher Shop Beef Cuts Chart T-shirt to a buyer from Beaumont, TX.

This primitive or folk art butcher chop beef cuts print by Edward M. Fielding harkens back to the day of the local butcher shops and makes a fine decorative print for the kitchen or local shop.

Butcher Shop Folk Art Online

The piece is a “PNG” file which means it can be purchased with your choice of background color or on products such as t-shirts, coffee mugs, throw pillows and other products as well as fine art prints and canvases. Metal and acrylic prints are also available. Metal is especially attractive in high traffic areas as it can be easily wiped down.

From Wikipedia:

A butcher is a person who may slaughter animals, dress their flesh, sell their meat or do any combination of these three tasks.[1] They may prepare standard cuts of meat and poultry for sale in retail or wholesale food establishments. A butcher may be employed by supermarkets, grocery stores, butcher shops and fish markets, slaughter house, or may be self-employed.[2]

An ancient trade, whose duties may date back to the domestication of livestock, butchers formed guilds in England as far back as 1272.[3] Today, many jurisdictions offer trade certifications for butchers. Some areas expect a three-year apprenticeship followed by the option of becoming a master butcher.[4][5]

Wood Prints – Just in time for Christmas, unique artwork printed on wood panels.

Why print on wood?

Photos printed on wood receive the same benefits as artwork, creating a beautiful and lasting commemoration of your artwork. To print a photo on wood is exactly what it sounds like – we take digital files and print them directly on sustainable plywood.

Wood photo prints differ from other methods like photo mounting and dye sublimation printing on wood in that it does not print the picture on paper first and then glue or heat transfer the picture to the wood surface. The picture is literally printed directly onto the wood surface, providing a richer, more vibrant result.

Grain is king with wood “canvas”

It’s all about the grain. One of the coolest features of wood photo printing is how the natural lines of the wood grain show through the lighter colors of an picture or photo. The primary reason for this is that no white ink is used in the printing process, so any white color is replaced with the natural color of the wood.

Each Print is Unique

Plywood is such a cool canvas for printing because every print is unique. Like a fingerprint, no two sheets of plywood have the same grain signature, so every print – regardless if the same picture is used – becomes a unique piece of art. The natural color of plywood also makes for a great frame.

Any image in the collection of over 4,500 images can be printed on wood. Of course paper, metal, acrylic, canvas and other surfaces are also available.

Understanding Print On Demand – Part One

PODs or Print On Demand is just one of the amazing technologies we enjoy in the Internet fueled economy.  POD can pertain to book or artwork is basically affordable custom manufacturing.  Products created only when the customer places an order.

Print on demand (POD) is a printing technology and business process in which copies of a book (or other document) are not printed until an order has been received, allowing books to be printed singly, or in small quantities. While build to order has been an established business model in many other industries, “print on demand” developed only after digital printing began, because it was not economical to print single copies using traditional printing technology such as letterpress and offset printing.

Before digital printing it would have been prohibitively expensive to produce a one off product.  Imagine going to a letterpress shop and asking the printer for a quote to print a single business card or a single wedding invitation. It just wouldn’t happen.

Print On Demand for Authors

Vanity printers have been around for decades.  Printers who would print a number of books for a “self-published” author looking to market their own books or perhaps create books as a promotion or giveaway item.  These authors were interested in bypassing the traditional mass publishing companies and create products directly.  Often this meant living with box loads of books in the garage or storage unit for years.

Now print on demand publishers such as Lulu or Amazon’s CreateSpace can inexpensively inventory and print and ship a book on demand when a buyer wants a single copy.  And they can offer these books on vast merchandising sites such as Amazon.

This is the method I used to create and sell my books “the Quotable Westie” and “Pugs”.

The print quality is not what you’d expect from a high quality coffee table book printed in Italy.  But the print on demand digital printing method allows the author to offer a unique book at a very affordable price.  These little books make great gift items and the quality is acceptable.

For the buyer, POD books allows for more choices and undeserved niches on subjects and topics might never make it to the shelves of a national chain store book merchant.

How To Create POD books

Creating POD books can be a bit tricky but vendors such as Lulu and Createspace offer downloadable templates to use.  Straight text is the easiest way to create a book as their are no graphics to format but it is possible to layout a photo or graphic heavy book, page by page in Photoshop.  All of the information can be found on the various vendor websites.  Cover images can be licensed and cover designers offer their services online.  Don’t skimp on the cover as this is the main marketing vehicle for any book.

Coming Up – Part Two of Understanding Print On Demand

In Part Two of Understanding Print On Demand, we’ll discuss buying and selling art via Print On Demand sites for artists and collectors.

Black and White Ink Jet Printing

One of the impressive things about the Epson P600 is its handling of black and white images. There are 4 different black links inside the printer. Three of these inks work in combination to print over a wider dynamic range than just using one ink. There are two different blacks that are selectable depending on the paper you are using (1 for photo-gloss and 1 for matte finish). Note that switching between the blacks will use up a little bit of ink, but Epson has minimized this considerably.

In the excellent series of video blogs, “The Art of Photography” by Ted Forbes, Ted talks about black and white photography printing using the Epson P600.

From the manufacturer:  The all-new Epson SureColor P600 features Epson UltraChrome HD Ink for extraordinary exhibition-quality prints. With unprecedented black density and breakthrough Resin Encapsulation Technology, the P600 delivers the richest blacks with an incredible level of sharpness. Three-level Black Ink technology delivers smooth tonal transitions for the finest black-and-white prints. High-capacity, individual ink cartridges improve your productivity with fewer user interventions. Advanced media handling allows you to easily print with a wide variety of fine art and roll papers. Create borderless 13″ x 19″ prints and panoramas over 10 feet long. Whatever you print, the SureColor P600 delivers such dramatically bold images, it sets a groundbreaking new benchmark in photographic quality.
