I was born in Hawaii, my father was stationed at Schofield Barracks training for an eventual deployment in the Vietnam conflict. I only got to spend six months in the tropical paradise before my sister, mother and I moved closer to family in Connecticut while my Dad went over to Asia to fight in the 1st Cavalry Division.

I wouldn’t return to Hawaii for 47 years. A trip to Maui allowed me to explore the island from the very top of Mount Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano, which towers 10,023 feet high above the magical island of Maui.

Kite Beach, Maui Hawaii – One of the newest sports on Maui is Kiteboarding/Surfing. Kanaha Beach Park is where beginner, intermediate and advanced Kiters gather. It is known as Kite Beach. Kiters share the water with Windsurfers who have dominated the area since the early 1980s. Since 2008 there has been an explosion in the number of Kiters mostly due to advances in equipment and safety.

A surfboard is an elongated platform used in the sport of surfing. Surfboards are relatively light, but are strong enough to support an individual standing on them while riding a breaking wave. They were invented in ancient Hawaii, where they were known as papa he’e nalu in the Hawaiian language; they were usually made of wood from local trees, such as koa, and were often over 15 feet (5 m) in length and extremely heavy. On Maui one can find a few surf board fences made from discarded surfboards.

Ocean Safety Officers (OSO), or lifeguards, are on duty every day from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

As part of the island-wide 9-1-1 Emergency System, all OSO are trained above and beyond Unites States Lifesaving Association (USLA) certification and all are certified in American Heart Association (AHA) CPR for Health Care Provider and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). Each OSO is skilled in rescue techniques using equipment such as rescue boards, tubes and fins, jet skis, four-wheel drive ATV’s, and first aid supplies.

A fantasy composite image of a NYC taxi cab on the beaches of Maui. Too bad, no taxi service to the mainland. I guess you’ll just have to stay in paradise!

Notes: Schofield Barracks is a United States Army installation and census-designated place (CDP) located in the City and County of Honolulu and in the Wahiawa District of the American island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. Schofield Barracks lies adjacent to the town of Wahiawā, separated from most of it by Lake Wilson (also known as Wahiawā Reservoir). Schofield Barracks is named after Lieutenant General John McAllister Schofield, Commanding General United States Army August 1888 to September 1895. He had been sent to Hawaiʻi in 1872 and had recommended the establishment of a naval base at Pearl Harbor.

The 1st Cavalry Division (“First Team”[1]) is one of the most decorated combat divisions of the United States Army, as well as the other four branches of the U.S. military.[2][not in citation given] It is based at Fort Hood, Texas. It was formed in 1921 and served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, with the Stabilization Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the Iraq War, and in the War in Afghanistan (2001–present). As of 2013, the 1st Cavalry Division is subordinate to III Corps and is commanded by Major General Michael Bills.
