In situ (/ɪn ˈsɪtjuː/ or /ɪn ˈsaɪtʃuː/ or /ɪn ˈsiːtuː/; often not italicized in English is a Latin phrase that translates literally to “on site” or “in position”. It means “locally”, “on site”, “on the premises” or “in place”

Connecticut River Farm Vermont

I often find myself meandering along the Connecticut River that divides New Hampshire and Vermont. New Hampshire owns the river if you must know.  Right up to the banks on the other side.   With it comes the responsibility of paying for all of the bridges.

The boundary issue between Vermont and New Hampshire dates back to King George’s time of rule in the 1700’s. During this time, the land spreading from the Connecticut River westward was known as the New Hampshire Grants.
At that time, New Hampshire regarded the river as its own. New Hampshire officials and residents built bridges spanning the river and maintained them. In the History of New Hampshire, published in 1792, Jeremy Belknap wrote, “from a point near Hinsdale, New Hampshire, up to the forty-fifth degree of latitude, the western bank of that river is the western boundary of New Hampshire and the eastern boundary of Vermont.”  – link

You can drive along on the New Hampshire side via Route 10 or on the Vermont side via Route 5.  Both offer a treasure trove of landscape and scenic photography opportunities.

One day driving along the Connecticut River on Route 5 in I spotted this great scene and just had to pull over, pop on the hazard lights, carefully cross the road, hop the guard rail, fight the tick infested weeds and slippery mud at the bottom of a ravine to find the perfect spot to capture reflections coming off the slow moving water of the Connecticut (the CT River has a series a dams that control its flow and is used for hydro power).

The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New England region of the United States, flowing roughly southward for 406 miles (653 km) through four states. It rises at the U.S. border with Quebec, Canada and discharges at Long Island Sound. Its watershed encompasses five U.S. states and one Canadian province, 11,260 square miles (29,200 km2) via 148 tributaries, 38 of which are major rivers. It produces 70% of Long Island Sound’s fresh water, discharging at 19,600 cubic feet (560 m3) per second.

Fine art photography of an old Hudson vintage automobile

Old Abandoned Hudson Vintage Car

From 1909 to 1954 the Detroit automobile company known as the Hudson Motor Car Company build and sold Hudson and other brand automobiles.  After 1954 Hudson merged with the  Nash-Kelvinator Corporation to form American Motors (AMC). The Hudson name was continued through the 1957 model year.

1955 Hudson Wasp

This old wreck of a car is still striking in its design despite the missing headlight and well worn paint, which looks incredible in this high resolution black and white fine art print.

Photography Prints

I found this old Hudson on a side lot of an automobile repair facility in a section of White River Junction slated for some “urban renewal”.  Office buildings along the White River were pushing out the car repair business and their collection of project cars which dotted the lot across from the Listen charity thrift store.

What really drew me to this old wreck of a car in the snow was the roundness of the hood, fenders and grill.  You just don’t see such sensual curves on cars anymore.

Photography Prints

From this selective color photo of the old Hudson, you can see the state of the paint after what must have been years in a barn or out in a farm field.

1940 Hudson Sedan
1940 Hudson Sedan

The 1940 Hudson had looked strikingly new. A broad grille of seven horizontal louvers spanned from fender to fender, and the fenders themselves were an outgrowth of the body, not bulbous lumps connected to the body by a catwalk as on General Motors’ cars. A sharp crease headlined the prow, on a hood hinged to open from the rear, a Hudson feature introduced the previous year.

 Photography Prints

As you can see in comparing my photograph of the old wreak of a Hudson, the headlight is missing as well as the fender and a lot of the trim.  What remains is the curvy hood and wheel wells as well as the distinctive grill of seven bars on each side.

For 1940 Hudson introduced coil spring independent front suspension, aircraft style shock absorbers mounted within the front springs and true center-point steering on all its models, a major advance in performance among cars in this price range.

I’m kind of sad thinking of my long lost friend the 1940 Hudson in the empty lot.  One day the lot was cleared the old service station leveled, to be replaced with new office buildings.  Never did know where these old cars went after that.

Music Lover - for rent via Turning Art

“Art completes a property,” said Vicki Negron, a senior vice president at the Corcoran Group. “It’s always a good idea to borrow it or rent it,” she said, before you put a home on the market, if you don’t already have attractive pieces on the walls.

There are two main advantages to this, she said. First, art is like “beautiful makeup” that can put the finishing touches on interior design. No matter how nice the house or apartment, she said, “I’ve never seen an empty room look spectacular.”

From INC:

TurningArt partners with independent artists from across the country to allow consumers to test out (i.e. rent) prints of their original artwork, without having to commit to purchasing the piece, which in many cases would be far more expensive than one is willing (or able) to afford. For $10 a month, customers can search the startup’s repository of thousands of independent works, with the option to ship whenever a particular piece strikes their fancy.

The print arrives framed and ready to hang on the wall right out of the box (it even includes a nail) and users can keep the piece for as long as they’d like — although, admittedly, this sounds like the same policy that got Blockbuster into trouble with its late fees. However, as you show the piece off to your friends, loved ones, and cats, leaving it to hang on the wall, you earn credit towards a purchase.

If you don’t like the print, you can just head over to your Netflix-like queue and prompt TurningArt to send you the next piece on your list. What’s more, the startup’s handmade frames make switching prints easy — no tools are required.

Obviously, TurningArt’s value proposition is twofold. The thousands of consumers now using the startup’s platform have a simple way to discover cool contemporary art, test those artworks at home, live in 3-D, and then purchase the piece if they’re so inclined.

UFO Lands in Farm Field

Alien Invasion by Edward Fielding

Alien Invasion by Edward Fielding is a fun image of a UFO space ship full of aliens from outer space landing in a wheat field in front of a befuddled farmer.

An unidentified flying object or UFO, is defined as a perceived object in the sky, not identifiable by standard criteria. Most UFOs are later identified as conventional objects or phenomena. The term is widely used for claimed observations of extraterrestrial craft.

THIS IS US tribute to Randall’s tree photograph

What is that large tree photograph in Randall's living room?

As a big This Is Us fan, I’ve been intrigued by the large black and white photograph of a bare tree in Randall’s living room.  Looming over the sofa and in the background of many a scene, this tree is not doubt a reference the Pearson’s family tree as well as the last resting place of their dear departed father.

11 Examples of Surreal Photography

The Sands of Time Surreal Photography

Surreal Photography

Taking a look at some recent surreal imagery from the portfolio of Edward Fielding, some of the most biazarre and unreal photographic works. Surreal means have the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream. It is a very creative style of photography as you have to have a good sense of vision and creativity to create things others wouldn’t normally see.

Surrealists prescribe by the notion of “automatic writing” – i.e. go with the flow, create where your mind leads you.

Photography Prints

One of the defining stylistic characteristics of Surrealism is the juxtaposition of imagery. The Surrealists like to put together crazy things that we wouldn’t normally associate with one another. They might compare a head to a shoe, or a door to a snake, or a cup to a tree.

The juxtaposition of elements or images that might not seem to have much to do with one another on the surface is a way that the Surrealists tried to get their readers to make new connections, and to see things in a different light. It’s also one of the key techniques that the Surrealists used in their writing.

Photography Prints

The Surrealists thought that Western society placed too much emphasis on rationality. The problem with rationality, according to them, is that there is a whole realm of experience that exists outside of the rational mind. After all, we often behave in irrational ways, don’t we?
