Canon 6D Mark II DSLR hits the streets in July 2017

Hard to believe I’ve had my trusty Canon 6D full frame camera at my side for five years now.  It’s been to Banff, Yellowstone, Florida and all over New England.  Tomorrow its headed to Iceland where hopefully it will keep up with the harsh environment in maybe its last grand performance before trading it in for the new Canon 6D Mark II DSLR.

The original Canon 6D was a great entry level full frame camera aimed mostly at landscape photographers.  It offered a nice big sensor and a no frills selection of features.  It was weather sealed – mine accidentally got left out in the rain over night and still keeps ticking.  Expect the price on the old model to drop.  It is still a great camera, so if you want to try the full frame experience (beautiful boken backgrounds), pick up the original older model while stock still exists.

Mostly lacking in the autofocus points but landscape photographers using tripods never really cared about that. Video was good and it worked well in low light with the full sized sensor.

The new version kicks every spec up a notch or two – larger files, a new varible angle touch screen, better processor,  and a lot more auto focus points.  No 4K video but you can do 4K timelapse IN CAMERA which is something my $500 GoPro Hero5 Black can do.

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II DSLR camera will go on sale in late July 2017 for $1,999 (body only); for $3,0999 as a kit with the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM II lens; and for $2,599 as a kit with the Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 STM lens.

If you need lenses – I’d keep an eye on Costco or BJs myself for any bundle deals.  Last time the Canon 6D was released I saw one of these box stores running a special deal with two kit lenses instead of one.  It’s worth scanning for such deals.  Warehouse stores never want to compete on direct price so they often work out special bundles with the manufacturers.
