Back from Prince Edward Island

This summer we returned to a place we know well and love dearly – Prince Edward Island, Canada.  It was a 15 hour trip after all of the bathroom breaks, gas stops and meals but it was worth it.  A car full of great teenagers, lots of art materials, camera equipment and lot of snacks.

On this trip to Prince Edward Island we rented a historic cottage that had been moved to the edge of a wheat field over looking Cape Tryon, the lighthouse and New London lighthouse.  The location provided plenty of opportunities to explore the red dirt country roads by foot and bike as well as the farmer trails, the cliffs, beaches and French River marinas.   The porch gave us a front row view of this scary thunderstorm which came through the area one evening.

The cottage also had a lot of great props to use in some of the concept shots I shot with some willing teenagers for the book cover market.

It was great having a red head along for some Anne of Green Gables inspired shots.

Parks Canada has these iconic red composite Adirondack chairs in various parts of the park through out the park system.  This pair was at a vantage point among the Greenwich dunes.

Experience a sense of awe and serenity as you take in the towering parabolic dune system and pristine white sand beaches at Greenwich. The extensive trail system offers approachable hiking and cycling opportunities, a wheelchair accessible loop, a floating boardwalk, and interpretive paneling. Beach goers discover a secluded expanse of soft sand and comfortable picnic areas, as well as supervised swimming. The Greenwich Interpretation Centre features interactive and multi-media displays that bring the region to life, highlighting evidence of 10,000 years of human history.

Waiting for the gang to finish their Cows ice cream and craft shopping at Avonlea Villiage, a former tourist attraction, now a shopping and eating destination, I decided to take some studied shots of the roof lines on this old church from the 1800s that was moved to the site.

I spotted this row of vintage antique tractors on way from New Glasgow to North Rustico on Prince Edward Island.  What a great bunch of beautiful old vintage tractors!  The sun was quite low and I had a car full of hungry teenagers so I had to move fast and grab some shots.  There were also some old farm equipment on display but the tractors were the stars of whatever this road side collection was.

I coaxed one of my son’s friends to play the part of Anne of Green Gables with a classic view of the cliffs of Prince Edward Island in the background.

Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Written for all ages, it has been considered a children’s novel since the mid-twentieth century. It recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in Prince Edward Island. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town.

All in all it was a great trip with lots of photo opportunities as well as time for mini golf, mussels, hiking, biking, badminton and a whole lot of fun.
